There are tons of different guitar chords, however if you’re just starting out there are only a handful that you need to be concerned with. If that’s you, I’d recommend starting with these 6: G, C, D, Am, Bm, Em. With those six chords you can play literally hundreds of songs – enough to keep you busy until you’re comfortable to move on!
If you’re a bit more advanced, then you’ll either want to add the other common chords like E, A and so forth, or you’ll be looking for embellishments and some of the lesser used chords, like B9 or B7, and others of that sort!
Regardless of your level, you can use this handy little tool that I had built to figure out guitar chords and alternate places to play those chords.
Find Any Guitar Chord With This Tool
Click on the frets to make a chord.
Click to the left of the strings to toggle between open and muted.
Select at least three strings.
There are many chords that match. Add fingering on more strings to narrow it down.
There are no matching chords.
You can use this tool to find guitar chords in two different ways:
- Reverse Lookup – Select the guitar chord you want from the selection box.
- Chord Finder – Input the chord you want to figure out the name of by clicking on the finger positions you’re using.
